Parent Groups and Educational OpportunitiesEvents CalendarThe Early Childhood Education Department offers some opportunities for parents. They include education, play group participation, and general support. If you have any questions about these or other opportunities, call 503-675-4096 or email lschreib@clackesd.k12.or.us. CommunicationThe Early Childhood Department offers an education series based on the Hanen Parent Program. The Hanen approach recognizes that families and other care-givers have the most influence on a child's early development. It uses classroom learning sessions and real-life practice at home to help families apply what they are learning and also to continue to use the techniques as their child grows. The course contains 10 sessions that focus on various aspects of communication and are adapted to use natural experiences in families to teach parents how to wait, really listen, and support children's efforts at talking. Parents have been very positive about the classes saying, "These are the communication skills we should be required to know before anyone has a baby- developmentally delayed or not," and "I am asking the right things and I get feedback from him and that's great." Classes are held on the basis of parent interest and staff availability. Parents interested in attending should contact Margaret Barilko or Judy Benko, ECE Speech/Language Pathologists, at 503-675-4114. Diagnosed or Suspected Autism Spectrum DisorderClasses are intermittently offered to parents of children with suspected or diagnosed Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorders.
